In center of Lucca (near Port St. Mary) is the church of San Leonardo in Borghi. Built in 1118, was restored indemaniata during the Napoleonic period and during the re-opening the public in 1821. Remains of medieval structures the south side, incorporated into the existing building. Of antique furniture is the Madonna in Glory with Saints John the Evangelist Mark and Leonardo Marracci, and entered in its heritage as well as some paintings previously placed in the oratory of the Banner (destroyed), including Our Lady of Mercy Biancucci Paul and Mary Miracle of Gaspare Mannucci (now in the sacristy). But the most interesting thing that can be admired inside the church is a chapel opened in 1917, dedicated to Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, the only example of organic liberty in a church in Lucca. By a large arched opening leads in a semi-circular domed ceiling, altar and two side openings. The altar table is rectangular, marble, is supported by two pairs of bronze angels in the round. In the background, set back, is the frontal; within a niche carved and decorated Gothic architectural forms that repeats, is located a polychrome wooden statue of the Madonna and Child by the sculptor Antonio Passaglia. The table of the altar was placed a triangular pediment. At the top of the chapel is decorated with a cycle of wall paintings. Among the projections of the pilasters, marked only by the texture of the marble facing, are represented in pairs of young women. Some horizontal bands, obtained with rectangular checkerboard frieze, suggests the base and the capital of each fake pilasters. Once it is painted on a theory of angels, followed by a series of concentric frames, decorated with geometric motifs. In the night sky there is also a Marian monogram.

This church is not well known, both from Lucca as located in a secluded area, and tourists alike, being reported in almost city guides, and it is a shame because it houses a masterpiece! Absolutely recommended!
