review by Henri Matisse Modigliani
On this day in 1869 in Le Cateau Cambresis Henri Matisse was born in France. In 1887 he moved to Paris and two years later began painting after a convalescence and decided to become an artist. In Paris he studied at the Academie Julian with Gustave Moreau, painting still lifes and landscapes. In 1897 and 1898 he visited the painter Russell who introduced him to the painting of Van Gogh's painting was influenced by the post-Impressionists, Van Gogh, Gauguin, Cezanne and Signac (many paintings of this period show the technique of poinitillisme) and Japanese painting, color became the crucial element of his paintings. In 1898 he went to London to study Turner.Nel 1905 he moved to the south of France ; experience during which he emphasized his tendency to emphasize strongly the color. At the Salon d'Autumn of 1905, several artists presented colored paintings violent, often dissonant, to express emotions without regard to the natural color of the subject. Matisse showed Open Window and Women with a hat. The artists were soon called Fauves (fairs, wild beasts). Matisse was recognized as one of its major esponenti.Il decline of the Fauves movement after 1906, however, did not slow the rise of Matisse, the majority of his most famous works were in fact painted between 1906 and 1917. Around 1904 he met Matisse, Pablo Picasso and the two became friends. Between 1911 and 1917 he worked at Paris' Academie Matisse , commissioned by the friends of Matisse, a non-profit private school in which Matisse educating young artists. In 1917 Matisse moved in Riviera. The work of the decade following this transfer shows a relaxation and a softening of his approach. After 1930 a new force and a courageous simplification appears in his work. With the help of assistants to complete the major collages, gouaches called découpés . His Blue Nudes series is the most important examples of the technique called "painting with scissors". Neglianni'40 also worked as a graphic artist and produced black and white illustrations for several books, including James Joyce's Ulysses. Matisse died in 1954. This little biography is a tribute to an artist that I love very much. I find it very beautiful his work, which shows the power of color, accompanied by the simplicity of subjects and signs, are like an explosion of emotions and even after a century, the works speak to us with all their energy. you soon and best wishes for 2011 to all!
